X : Beyond the Frontier. COOL!

Post by Musicker » Tue, 15. Dec 09, 03:05

Okay so I found a copy of X:BTF on Amazon for about 30 bucks.. so I decided to pick it up. The manual and disc and case all look perfect so it was well taken care of.

I am having such a blast learning the old (but new to me) controls! I can see how X2's controls evolved from this game.

The graphics have most definitely been upgraded biiiigtime from X to X2!!!!! There is a world (universe?) of difference!

I'm super happy to be Xperiencing this though, it's awesome for someone who is really into the X universe. I can't wait to play through the story to see what I've been missing out on in that respect!

I like seeing the interiors of stations.. now I see why people complained.. the ones in X2 weren't this detailed if I remember correctly, and X3 games have none.. bummer!

Ah well... back to flying around in the old universe!

Cheers,

Yeah, the original X is awesome. I found my copy in a charity shop, so it cost me about £1.50! Unbelievable bargin at that price. It's a great game. You really must play through it to the end. Well worth the effort :-)

I definitely plan on it - I am having a blast, just tooling back and forth between the solar energy plant and the IRE forge (beta?) and I just got enough cash to buy a SETA plus enough to get another small cargo of E-cells... now the cash should start rollin in! :)

Yep, with SETA, the game FINALLY opens up. I swear, that was one of the best moments in the series for me, coupled with when I got my first kill with an IRE...

30 Bucks? For a ten years old game?? :gruebel: Well, it's your money...
However, when I installed XT a few month ago, it was even better than when I first installed it. There wasn't so much as AA and AF back then and of course no 16:9 monitors :fg: . Hope you enjoy your ride to the roots, I always do :D

The only reason I haven't reinstalled this, is that I had a great deal of knashing of teeth, having to target each station before it showed up on radar... One day though... Ohh yes. One day...

At least I didn't pay 98.00 for a new copy.. I wasn't about to go THAT far to see the old game, at least not with the superbox ostensibly on the way. $30 was about my limit, but I'm glad I spent it, it's fun seeing how it all started.

I just bought my first tactical navigation system, I can bring up a sector map now! Woohoo!!! Now it's time to go out and see some other sectors.. *grin* I'm going to head towards Argon Prime and see what I can find..

This is such a blast. The graphics are sooooo dated but the gameplay is awesome, as in all the X universe games.

a small tip do not buy engine ugrades, buy rudder upgrades, why you will have to wait ages for the tl to catch up to you when transporting a station, the old one

"Sounds nice"? And the award for understatement of the year goes to shilhi

Even though i only started with X2 myself (i'm not quite a true X geriatric) i feel sorry for every one of you that haven't played X:BTF or X:T

@OP. My hat off to you for a very well spent $30

Are we horribly spoiled with the newer games or what? :o I've started Beyond the Frontier up again and I press Ctrl + C and nothing happens. I press G or F and nothing happens. I press Shift + J and I jolt forward in SETA at what I'm sure is an unhealthy velocity.

It's not really helped by the fact I'm currently playing TC as well - nothing in Beyond the Frontier seems to do what I expect it do. Now I'm docked in a Paranid 5MW shield fab trying to figure out how to dump my 1MW shield so I can upgrade :? It truly is a re-learning process, especially considering the last time I played through the game fully was in 1999 :)

And why did I think the best way to Chin's Clouds was via Paranid and Xenon space? *facepalm*

I just got to The Hole last night and docked at some station.. still trying to earn enough to upgrade from the 1mj shield. I love the Xtreme difficulty start! There is such a sense of accomplishment from each little advancement.

@:Nova, YES we are definitely spoiled these days.. I love it. I am running TC on my gaming rig which sits right next to the second computer, so while tooling through space in X:BTF, I can do logistics or maintenence work on my empire in TC. :) Seeing the difference in graphics side by side is pretty amazing.

I've had X-Gold since... 2002–2004? From a car boot sale and had never been opened. :)

Something I notice about BTF is that it appears that the Argon and Split are at tension with one another, and seemingly more so than the Boron, while the Paranid are entirely uninvolved with anything instead of at war with Argon. Teladi ships also worked on the basis of speed to escape fights rather than protection to keep their profit intact, or at least the capitals did.

I got X:BTF years ago, for $20 CAD (if that) or so. Awesome game, but I always had the same bug, on several PCs, where I'd randomly start spinning really fast in all directions. It would usually take a minute or so to slow down, but sometimes it never did and I'd have to reload.

Other than that, totally great game. I still remember your first encounter with the Teladi like it was yesterday...

Yep. I've explored The Hole, the Wall, Argon Prime, Ringo Moon, Red Light, Cloudbase SW, and Ore belt now, and I have to save frequently in stations, because there are two things that hit every once in a while that really mess me up: First, the ship will start spinning super fast in what seems to be a random direction, and I have to keep manipulating the mouse to get it to stop, by dragging in the opposite direction to the spin.
I expected this though, from reading accounts from other X:BTF players who have Windows XP systems. I can deal with this, being forewarned and knowing that with enough persistence I can stop the spinning.

The other issue is a little stranger, it will act just like the spinning problem, but it won't spin... the ship will just start shaking and moving about like you have the turbo boost on, and it wont' stop no matter what I have tried so far, barring reloading the game from the last save.
It's really annoying, but I just chalk it up to playing a game that is over 10 years old. :)

Its a nice game but x-tension adds so much to it i actually dont think ill ever replay BTF. Xtension has to be one of the best upgrades to a game ever. Just being to remotely manage your economy is priceless.

X-BTF etc pp

Post by Saheike » Fri, 21. May 10, 09:07

Hi, I just found the X-BTF for the first time. I now play it since 3 days and cannot find any galaxy map for it. Searching for the sector where to scan the asteroid for the Goners. Is there any map to find here?

A little help would be nice.
