Rolling Demo vs Game Performance

Post by GizmoEGO » Sun, 7. Dec 08, 03:23

Hello,

Can anyone confirm if using the rolling demo will give a good indication of game performance?

The reason I ask is I want to know if I can play the game at a decent visual level. I want to know if the rolling demo will help me evaulate if I can do this on my computer without upgrading my computer.

currently I have graphics set at medium and 1240x1024 and I getn an average of 15fps (min 5fps on some scenes) on the rolling demo. Is this would I would expect in the game too at the same settings?

Bit of a stretch, if your system can only do 15 in the demo,
it's likely to do worse in-game.

Then again there's the 1.3 patch, which seems to have upgraded
lower-system frame rates.

So maybe you'd be OK

The rolling demo is only a good indication of GFX performance and doesn't really stress your processor. If you're getting 15FPS average in the rolling demo you're gonna get a fair bit worse in the real game because of all the scripts and generally CPU intensive things running in the background.

When I bench and when I play the game my FPS are pretty close, but I also have windows XP-64 bit which is prolly screwing me anyway. If you are only getting 15FPS I'd be weary, try to OC or add some RAM and get your average to 30FPS then you should be ok to game on.

Thanx for the reply guys.

Can any of you compare what the rolling demo scores compared to your game?

It does depend on the relative ability of your processor and graphics card. Clearly, if you have an amazingly powerful CPU but your graphics card comes from the era of the dinosaurs, the rolling demo will be a reasonable indication of in-game performance. You are right though, that CPU performance is a factor, and it's one the rolling demo gives no indication of.

I've done more testing.

My CPU 6600 Dual Core @ 2.4GHz is only peaking out at 60% during the high polygon stage.

I think my system definitely needs a new GFX card :(

I currently have an ATI X800XT with 256MB
If I want to play this game at 1200x1024 at High GFX mode with a frame rate above 30fps what is the lowest priced GFX card that will do this?

Would an
GeForce 8800 GT
or
Radeon HD 4830

Do the trick?

My System is windows XP with 2GB ram with the above CPU.

My 256mb 8600GT spits out 40 FPS on the rolling demo. 4xAA, 8xAF 1280x1024, Everything on, or set to "high", except "glow".

Just to give you guys an idea of what to expect my hardware is fairly new and i only get 30-35 fps in busy sectors and dogfights which i find is playable but not what i was expecting when i upgraded. These readings are taken from XTC 1.3 running medium textures 2x aa 4x af at 1280 x 1024 my specs are in my sig.
It is worth noting since release each patch has given me a slight boost in perf so who knows when XTC 2.5 is out i may get back to my 80-90 fps that i was at with X3r

ps the rolling demo will only give you a graphical benchmark not a cpu assesment and TC is very very cpu bound at the moment

grab an 8800, they are a very cheap yet powerful card....hell, you can maybe get two for near the price of a 9800 and you will find...depending on the cards, they may even out perform the 9800.

I'm getting a Sapphire HD4850 for christmas and they're supposed to be absolutely fantastic cards :) .

Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think a Quad Core 2.4Ghz Intel processor, 4GB RAM and 512MB Sapphire HD4850 on XP 32bit SP3 perform?

I've got one! 8xAA and 16xAF, I'd say that's fantastic enough for me :D

I had one, it wan't too good - the CPU is the weaklink.

But now I have E8600 Dual Core, and two ATI 4850s in Crossfire - fast.
This signature is here because it makes my posts look longer and therefore makes me seem like I know what I am talking about - which I do, honest! For example, the Ray is the best M2 and a Falcon always beats the other M3s, see!

Hey, now that TC is out the Ray does seem to be one of the best M2's. Maybe I had better change my sig...
